Pen and Ink on Paper

This piece is an illustration of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale The Wild Swans. In the story eleven princes were turned into swans. Their sister breaks the spell by taking a vow of silence and knitting stinging nettles into sweaters with her bare hands. She is almost executed for being a witch right before she finishes the last sleeve of the last sweater. All her brothers are saved and the princess vindicated, but the one with no sleeve has a wing instead of an arm.
